He completed medical school at St. Louis University, residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (New Hampshire), and fellowships at University of Kansas and Mayo Clinic-Rochester. He has studied biomarkers in cancer pathology from the basic science and translational perspectives. He also has studied the limitations of the Gleason grading system in prostate cancer, and found by digital assessment of the presence and amount of growth patterns in prostate cancer that the cribriform pattern was an independent, adverse prognostic indicator (2011). He has pursued prostate cancer grading studies and was co-facilitator of the 2019 prostate cancer grading consensus conference in Nice, France.
