After completing his residency training in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology and fellowship training in Surgical Pathology, Dr. Shen became an assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine (2002-2003) before joining the Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital (Houston, Texas) in 2004. In 2005 he joined the Weill Medical College faculty as assistant professor and became a professor since 2013. He is currently associate director of surgical pathology, medical director of the immunohistochemistry lab and fellowship director of GU-medical kidney pathology at the Houston Methodist Hospital.
