These were taken as read and approved unanimously.

General business:
At last year’s AGM it was proposed by Dr. David Bostwick that the ISUP revision of the Gleason grading should be referred to as the ISUP modified Gleason score. Dr. Daniel Berney agreed but suggested that the year 2005 be specified in case further revisions take place. The members in attendance at the 2010 AGM agreed to officially refer to this version of the Gleason grading as the ISUP 2005 modified Gleason score. Subsequently, some members of the Society, including Drs. Samson Fine and Victor Reuter, requested that this decision should be clarified. Dr. Fine suggested that the recent evolution of the Gleason grading has been gradual and that some of the ISUP 2005 modifications were applied already before 2005 in some laboratories. Dr. Berney mentioned that as Associate Editor of Histopathology he sees the need to specify the version of the grading system that has been used when study design is described. Dr. Jonathan Epstein agreed and emphasized that the term ISUP 2005 modified Gleason score should not be used in our routine reports but rather be restricted for use in study protocols. There was a general agreement on these points.

President’s report:
The 2010-11 year has been a busy one for the ISUP. I want to thank the Executive, the Councillors and Members of the Society for their tremendous contribution on a number of issues over the last year. To remind everybody the principle functions and activities of this Society relate to education, knowledge synthesis especially in the form of consensus conferences, trainee support, recognition of achievement in urologic pathology both for trainees and members and also other social activities and networking.

Regarding education, our showcase event is the companion meeting of the USCAP, this has been a great success and I want to thank Christina Magi-Galluzzi and Kiril Trpkov for moderating tonight’s very successful event.

The USCAP companion meeting is not the only ISUP-sponsored educational event over the last year. The ISUP co-sponsored events at the International Academy of Pathology [IAP] bi-annual meeting in Sao Paulo in October of this year. Additionally, there was an ISUP-sponsored meeting as part of the Australasian division of the IAP in Sydney in June of this year. The Australasian division has a yearly joined meeting with the ISUP and I would like to particularly thank our Australasian GU colleagues including Hema Samaratunga, Warick Delprado, James Kench, David Clouston and, of course, our Past President, Dr. Brett Delahunt.

In August, the ISUP will co-sponsor a course on prostate cancer with the European Society of Pathology as part of the European Congress Pathology in Helsinki, Finland. Additionally, the ISUP is hoping to co-sponsor one or more events as part of the bi-annual IAP meeting in Cape Town in 2012. Other co-sponsored events are being discussed as well.

With regard to our Consensus Conference activity, I am pleased to report that the Radical Prostatectomy Consensus Conference which occurred two years ago in Boston was published electronically last fall and in print in the January 2011 issue of Modern Pathology as a string of six articles. This was a tremendous amount of work and I want to knowledge the assistance of the other officers of the Society and co-authors in bringing this project to fruition. The RP Consensus Conference certainly defined some guidelines for practice and also identified the areas where more research is needed. It should be noted that all participating members at the consensus conference are recognized with 6 Pub Med citations.

This afternoon, the Council spent a fair bit of time discussing our next consensus conference on renal tumors which will be held in conjunction with the USCAP meeting in Vancouver next March. This consensus conference will follow a similar format with multiple working groups led by leaders in the field. The membership will be engaged through a survey instrument and each dues-paying member who completes the survey will be invited to attend the consensus conference next year. I think these consensus conferences are of immense importance because they can influence other important international standards such as the TNM-UICC staging systems and the WHO Blue Book Classifications. It is important for us as a Society to have these conferences and be able to synthesize the knowledge and inform other international guidelines and standards initiatives.

In the area of trainee support, I want to recognize the important work of Samson Fine from Memorial Sloan Kettering who chairs the Fellowship Stipend Award Committee. This year he was assisted by Antonio Lopez-Beltran, Asli Yilmaz and Tamara Lotan. After reviewer’s applications, the ISUP stipend awards were given to the following trainees: Steven Smith [U Mich], Sean Williamson [Indiana University] and Hongying Huang [NYU]

Regarding trainee recognition I want to thank Ken Iczkowski for his leadership in choosing the winners of the “Excellence in Urological Pathology Award” for this year. The three awardees have been presented with their certificates at the beginning of our companion meeting this evening. I would like to thank Dan Berney, Jesse McKenney and Adeboye Osunkoya for assisting Ken with this important task.

In terms of recognition of “eminent services in advancement of urological pathology” we have awarded Dr. Robin Young a Koss medal this evening for career-level contributions and achievement and in our subspecialty. You will recall last year Dr. Alberto Ayala from Houston was the Koss medallist in this category.

I also wanted to mention the important social aspects of our Society. This evening we had a very well attended reception, where we got to meet our colleagues from around the world. While many of us have resorted to emails, teleconferences and web-access, it is really nice to be able to meet people in person and gain a better understanding of them as individuals and personalities.

In conclusion, I want to thank our extremely hardworking Executive including our Past-President Brett Delahunt, President-Elect Rudolfo Montironi, Liang Cheng our Treasurer and specially Lars Egevad for his exceptional work over the last year in keeping people in the loop. It has been a wonderful experience being your President for the last two years. The time has gone quickly and I hope that I have been able to help move our field forward during my term. It has certainly been a time of hard work and stress but one of satisfaction and enjoyment as well.

Secretary’s report: The Society has continued to grow during 2010 and has now 500 members including 83 resident members and 417 senior members. Our communication with the members will be improved by sending two letters from the President per year, one after the AGM together with the AGM minutes and one in early autumn. The website will be improved with information about upcoming meetings and courses in the field of urological pathology and there will be a function to post available positions.

Treasurer’s report: The Treasurer, Dr. Liang Cheng, has submitted his letter of resignation to the Society after 7 years of service. Dr. Cheng took the opportunity to thank the other officers for their support. The Treasurer reported that the financesof the Society were healthy. Last year approximately 80% of the members paid their dues. He also mentioned the significant growth of the Society in recent years and pointed out that 40% of the members are now non-USA residents.

The President expressed gratitude on behalf of the Society for the work done by Dr. Cheng during his term as Treasurer. A gift consisting of elegant Swedish glass art was presented to Liang by the Society.

Nominations: The Executive committee nominated the following as Officers of the Society for a two year term (2011-2013):

President
Rodolfo Montironi

Past President
John Srigley

President-Elect
Peter Humphrey

Secretary
Lars Egevad

Treasurer
Ming Zhou

New councillors:
International Councillor(North America)
Mahul Amin

Special Councillor for Archives
Brett Delahunt

No other nominations had been received by the Secretary. The nominations were approved unanimously by the meeting.

The President-Elect Dr. Montironi assumed the Presidency and gave an address. Professor Montironi summarized the achievements of the Past Presidents and mentioned his own plans for the next two year period. Dr. Montironi presented a personal gift to Dr. Srigley, an antique Italian book: Encyclopedia Medica Italiana. He also awarded the Koss medal to Dr. Srigley for his outstanding contributions to the Society.

The meeting adjourned at 10.15 p.m.

Lars Egevad
Secretary ISUP

Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of the International Society of Urological Pathology held at the Henry B Gonzalez Convention Center, San Antonio, TX on February 26, 2011 Present: Dr. John Srigley (President), Dr. Liang Cheng (Treasurer), Dr. Lars Egevad (Secretary), Dr. Rodolfo Montironi (President-Elect) and 63 other members as recorded in the attendance register. … Continue reading Minutes Annual General Meeting 2011 →

["post-335","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
